About the Artist
Los Angeles based artist Jenie Eitel, grew up on the small island of Kauai, Hawaii, where she studied fine art from a young age. Eitel received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of San Diego and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California, with her husband Jay Eitel and their dog Bentley.
Jenie’s non-representational abstractions are inspired by her mother’s still-life watercolors of native Hawaiian flowers, and are reminiscent of the vibrant landscapes of her childhood home. Living in Los Angeles, with its elevated sense of style, fashion, and design, has encouraged Jenie t0 embrace a greater awareness of composition, and has increased the expressive strength and depth of her work.
Jenie uses a type of wet-on-wet or alla prima (Italian meaning at first attempt) technique, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. A sense of movement and depth are created as one color is pulled through another with palette knives of varying shapes and sizes. Her technique exploits the potential for fluid energy in application, but also requires a certain finesse in embracing unpredictability.
Layer upon layer of vibrant colored acrylics transform each canvas into a tapestry of colorful nuances and textural complexities. Hung at any angle desired, viewers are given room to construct their own narratives around the varying shapes and colors. Each piece is named vaguely, being that making an absolute conclusion about a piece often robs it of its changeability and continual power inform.
Jenie has found that her contemporary technique of abstract painting, using the vibrancy and depth in bold colors and intricate textures, is her most genuine form of expression. She hopes that her passion speaks to viewers on a personal level, while bringing joy and beauty, as well as a unique detail to a home or surrounding.
